UMTS

Stands for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, part of the International Telecommunications Union's vision of a global family of 'third-generation' (3G) mobile communications systems. A key role is expected in the future mass market for high-quality wireless multimedia communications that will approach 2 billion users worldwide by the year 2010.

URL

Uniform Resource Locator: the WWW address. The URL starts with an alphabetic abbreviation (e.g. http: ) followed by the address of the server and specification of the directory and file.

USB

Stands for "Universal Serial Bus". Not only can all peripheral devices such as keyboard, mouse, joystick and scanner be connected to a USB interface, but also hubs (distributors). The USB interface is very fast (480 Mbits/s in USB 2.0) and enables Plug and Play. The plug and jack are the same for all USB devices.

Usenet

Comes from Users Network. Union of (mostly) university networks where the Network News (called Newsgroups today) was developed. Meanwhile, the Usenet has become completely integrated in the Internet.

User

Usually the person who uses specific programs, a computer or the Internet is called the 'User'.
